VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit (SEBU) is looking for a highly motivated Member of Technical Staff to join the team that is building a cloud-native real-time controller platform for 5G mobile networks. The 5G mobile network is undergoing a major transformation into a virtualized, cloud-native and software-defined network, and in this role, you will be engineering a product at the intersection of cloud and 5G that is envisioned to disrupt the telecom industry.
Knowledge about wireless or mobile radio access networks is a plus but not necessary.
In this role, you will be responsible for product development, testing and automation with focus on backend, policies, security and FCAPS management of new VMware Platform. The goal is to make this platform as easy as possible to operate at scale.
You will leverage your expertise in developing policy APIs (like Open Policy Agent (OPA)), backends, cloud-native development tools such as helm, CI/CD systems (Jenkins or GitLab or ArgoCD or harness.io) and cloud security (think technologies like Kubernetes and Docker, cloud platforms like VMware, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) to help build a robust and secure cloud software.
In the process, you will work with the latest and greatest in cloud, networking and 5G, collaborate closely with experts in these fields, experience first-hand the process of building a new product portfolio, and work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities.
Success in the Role: What a re the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
Within 30 days of joining, you will become familiar with the cloud-native product architecture and the services and APIs offered by the product, and gain hands-on experience with product deployment and operations, build and CI/CD pipelines, and testing and automation frameworks currently used by the team.
Within 60 days, you will create functional specifications for the backend of a management system part of new product portfolios. This would require working closely with peers in the team building libraries and platform/controller components.
Within 90 days, you will begin to contribute on policy APIs, some components of security and FCAPS management of the VMware platform.
Within 180 days, you will build micro-services, features in the backend that are reliable, highly available, scalable, performant, and secure.
Within 360 days, you will be the go-to person for all things related to the component(s) you own in the backend and some critical features of the management system.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:
Golang/C/C++/Python Coding backend engineer, you will contribute to APIs, policy, security and FCAPS management for a new VMware product portfolio at the intersection of cloud, networking and 5G.
Candidate Experience needed from 4 to 9 yrs
Contribute to development and testing for a new VMware product portfolio; own the end-to-end quality of the components related to backend of a management system.
Collaborate with developers from other teams to leverage common libraries and tools for build, backend development, security and FCAPS management.
Contribute to the development of component level test plans and test cases
Automate component level testing and drive automation of system level test automation
Define and implement CI/CD pipelines to ensure ease of product deployment
Write documents like API specifications, release notes, operation guides etc.
Collaborate with developers, frontend engineers, QA engineers, product managers, solution architects, field engineers and SREs to make the product ease to deploy and operate.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
In this role, you will be reporting to an Engineering Director located in the United States. The team currently focusses on the operational aspects of the new portfolio of products in the open 5G networking space. The team is based mostly in the US but is now growing internationally to be closer to various commercial opportunities that are shaping up in various regions of the world. The team follows an open culture at work where everyone is encouraged to learn from each other, teach others and grow along with others by being collaborative and courteous.
Where is this role located?
This role is open to Hybrid can be done anywhere in Bangalore or Pune, India. You will have the option to work from the office partly or fully if you wish to do so. You will be expected to live within a reasonable commute of the office.
