This Network Software Engineer role in the VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit is an opportunity to work on an innovative new product that is disrupting the telecom industry. In this role, you will be responsible for developing a modern management platform for 5G networks that is cloud native, AI/ML driven, programmable & developer friendly. You will also contribute to developing APIs and SDKs that 3rd-party developers will use to build intelligent applications for 5G networks. In the process, you will work and innovate with the latest technologies in cloud, networking, AI/ML and 5G, collaborate closely with experts in these fields, experience first-hand the process of building a new product, and work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
As a key member of the product R&D team, you will drive the design, implementation, optimization and testing of various services and APIs for a modern management platform for 5G networks. The technical success of your contributions will be defined in terms of the characteristics of your services and APIs like messaging throughput (metrics, logs, traces, alarms, configurations), resiliency and high availability, conformance to industry standards, sustainability/efficiency in resource utilization (CPUs, memory, storage and networking bandwidth), ease of API usage by 3rd parties, and ease of operations.
Within 30 days of joining, you will be expected to ramp up on the product architecture and high-level design details of the product components. You will be expected to deliver a few simple bug fixes or small features to gain familiarity with the agile software development process.
Within 90 days, you will be expected to design, implement and test more complex features. You will be expected to code in Java/Go and Python. Experience with C++ is a bonus but not mandatory.
Within 180 days, you will be expected to gain a more complete understanding of the end-to-end system. You will be expected to work with owners of different components to design and implement features that require coordination across the broader team. You will be able to troubleshoot issues reported by customers and partners, and improve the usability of the product.
Within 360 days, you will be expected to independently design and develop complex features and collaborate with fellow engineers as needed. You will be a self-starter and lean into projects until the best solution is found.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:
Design services and APIs for network management, including writing design documents and test cases.
Implement the services and APIs, most commonly in Java, Go or Python. Meet not just functional requirements but also non-functional requirements related to quality, security and usability.
Collaborate with fellow engineers, QA and product management to finalize design, complete code reviews and testing, and merge with the product codebase.
Conduct performance profiling and optimize performance and resource utilization as necessary to meet requirements and stay within resource budgets.
Provide support and fix bugs as reported by customers, partners or internal teams.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is Rakesh Misra. Rakesh is a Director of R&D in VMware and leads an R&D engineering team that is responsible for several VMware products in the mobile networking space. Rakesh joined VMware in 2019 after the startup he had co-founded, Uhana Inc., to commercialize his PhD research at Stanford University on data-driven and software-defined mobile networks, was acquired by VMware. His team is distributed across the US & Europe and is now expanding to India. His team follows an open culture at work where everyone is encouraged to learn from each other, teach and support others, and grow together by being collaborative and courteous.
Where is this role located?
This role is in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India and is open to remote work. If you live in the surrounding area, you will have the option to work from the office partly or fully if you wish to do so.
