Job description

The School Principal should have an overall perspective of the functioning of the different departments of the School i.e. academic, administrative, personnel and pastoral to guide them and to be able to plan for their utilization in the pursuit of the larger vision of the school. The Principal needs to actively involve him/herself in planning for the optimal utilization of the resources available in the pursuit of organization vision, and to seek ways to supplement these resources from the outer environment.

1. Planning /Visioning

• To communicate with all stakeholders the organization vision, in an ongoing manner
• To develop an Annual School Action Plan on the basis of the longer term Strategic Plan
• To supervise the implementation of the above Plan, benchmark performance on the basis of the key parameters, and to submit a quarterly status reports to the Head of Education on the learning accruing from this implementation
• To set Annual Targets as the basis for performance appraisal, for him/herself on the basis of the School Action Plan
• To constantly keep the curriculum, of the various levels of the school, under review, to ensure its relevance and student-friendliness
• To ensure that the student assessment systems in operation enable the process of curriculum implementation to be effectively monitored, in an ongoing manner
• On an annual basis to review the system of progress reporting to parents

2. Administration/Finance

• In consultation with organization streamline and implement admission procedures in line with organization policies
• To monitor student: division ratios in line with organization policies
• To develop an atmosphere in the school that would lead to a conducive learning environment
• The implementation of systems that would ensure the punctuality and regularity of students
• The facilitation of the preparation of the Annual School Calendar
• The design and/or provision of job descriptions for all school personnel
• The timely assessment of staffing needs and the implementation of effective recruitment procedures
• Responsibility for ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the school building and all its facilities
• The evolution and monitoring of the implementation of effective systems of resource utilization
• The Maintenance of office records, to ensure that statutory requirements are met, and for ease of accessibility
• Participation in the preparation of the school budgets and the associated cash flows in line with the Annual School Action Plan
• Communication of the status of the budget to the school’s Core Group
• The review of the status of student fee collections, and the initiation of suitable remedial measures
• The overseeing of the giving of any scholarships, fee concessions or other financial assistance
• The monitoring of any ad hoc financial collections in the school
• The sanctioning of the use of any school facilities to outside agencies

3. Liaison and Linkages

A. Internal Liaison

• Meeting with the Head of Education on a regular basis in order to keep him/her fully informed of all happenings in the school
• The establishment of a collaborative relationship with the Chairperson of the SMC and community local leadership
• The establishment of an effective team relationship with the Vice Principal for actualizing the School’s Annual Action
• The organization of monthly Development Meetings in order to ensure that effective communication takes place within the flattened organizational structure
• The holding of regular Staff Meetings and to ensure a climate of open communication within the school, especially among the members of the Core Group

B. External Liaison

• Involvement of the parent body as partners in the education of their offspring and in the processes of school development through the PTA, orientation programs, open classrooms, developmental meetings and other suitable strategies
• The making of oneself available for meetings with individual stakeholders, on a needs basis, by appointment
• Liaising with the State Education Department and other relevant Government bodies for the maintenance of good relationships and the fulfilling of requirements
• Liaison with significant personal under the International; Academic Partnership and IED, through organization to ensure effective follow-up on the programmes offered

4. Guidance and Supervision

• Guidance to the teachers in the organization of effective parent orientation programs
• The institutionalization of the systems of Academic Result Analyses at all levels
• The evolution and supervision of sound homework assignment policies
• The timely mid-term appraisal of the work of probationary teachers and the giving of appropriate written guidance
• The appraisal or the review of the appraisal of the work of the Vice Principal, the Dissemination Coordinator, all post holders and all teaching and non-teaching staff and the giving of appropriate guidance

5. Training

• Responsibility for the training of all staff by the use of techniques of delegation e.g. the formation of committees
• The development of an informed Core Group
• The taking on of the Government specified teaching loads
• The deputing of staff to appropriate workshops
• The training of the Core Group in report writing
• The upgradation of ones own skills in the areas of both education and management
• Contributing to the upgradation of the programs of the Schools Department based upon whatever skills the incumbent possesses
