ABOUT US: Rumi Schools

An initiative aimed at making quality education accessible to students in government schools in rural India. We are a small team of motivated individuals passionate about making an impact in Rural Education space in India. We aim to work with existing schools in rural parts of India, supplement the existing system to provide better quality resources for students to develop their skillsets in the fields of academics, co-curricular activities and essential life skills. The objectives of this venture include,

To provide better opportunities to less privileged students from rural areas.

Focus on making learning engaging and exciting, to inculcate a sense of passion and curiosity for learning in students rather than sole emphasis on cracking exams.

To encourage all domains equally, not just academics: enable rural students to develop their skillsets, connect them with mentors and transform them into world class artists, sportsperson, leaders, entrepreneurs.

To instil good values and produce responsible citizens: To build a society which is more inclusive and tolerant, devoid of biases against race-religion-minorities, raise awareness about environmental concerns (climate change, food-water scarcity crisis, soil conservation), promote gender equality, guide them about career planning, entrepreneurship etc

The BIG PICTURE: This project is eventually aimed to be under the more ambitious project of Model Village. The eventual goal is to have hundreds of such Model-Villages spread across rural India with initiatives in modernising agriculture, improving healthcare, promoting sustainable communities, encouraging traditional arts-crafts, emphasis on waste management and eco-tourism. We believe this Rural-Education project is the first step in our larger vision. Where is the first school located ? This is not yet finalised. We are in contact with a school in the village of Kalasa in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. If everything works out, it may well be the first school we work with.

THE CHALLENGE: Job description

We are currently looking for passionate teachers, educators or anyone genuinely interested in making an impact in rural education sector, bringing about a change in teaching methodology, determined to work on how to increase student engagement in class, how to avoid students dropping out of rural schools, how to make students fall in love with lifelong learning and not see education as a burden, how we can provide a platform for rural students to develop and showcase their skillsets etc

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: As a volunteer, you can work on any of the following,

Creating courses: Create engaging and immersive lessons for students: Design activities, hands-on projects, group assignments in any subject of your expertise. Courses can be created in English, which will later be translated to local languages.

Online teaching, mentoring: Teach online, become mentor to students, assign weekly tasks, monitor their progress, guide them to take their skills to next level. Knowing Kannada would be a prerequisite to teach online at our first school.

School Visits: Visit school occasionally to interact and forge a close bond with students.

Research and brainstorming on

a. Student engagement in classes: How to make kids genuinely excited and passionate for learning, how to inculcate a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm and not see education as a burden ? What kind of activities, projects, group assignments are most effective ?

b. Training teachers: How to motivate and involve school teachers in our initiative

c. Continuous evaluation:

i. How to develop a systematic framework and evaluate student progress in a quantifiable way ?

ii. How to measure impact of our own methodology ? How do we continuously monitor effectiveness of our initiative and quantify them ?

THE REQUIREMENTS: Required skills

A passion for teaching, creating courses, guiding students, being a mentor and inspiring young minds. Additionally it is a huge plus, if you can visit school on occasional weekends, interact and form a close bond with students.

Genuinely interested in making an impact in education sector, to inculcate a sense of passion for learning in kids, to make learning engaging, immersive and fun, rather than sole emphasis on scoring marks and cracking exams.

Relish brainstorming and researching about various teaching methodologies, how to increase student engagement, how to make lessons engaging, how to make students passionate for lifelong learning, how to design immersive projects/assignments aimed at maximising learning, experimenting with various leading school systems such as Finland, Japan etc

For teaching roles, you will need to know Kannada. However it is not a necessity for getting involved in other tasks such as course creation, designing projects / assignments/ activities, brainstorming teaching methodologies and all other volunteer roles.

Take pride and fulfilment to be part of a social enterprise, learn and grow with other like minded team members. Ability to take initiatives, take extreme ownership of tasks and work with minimal supervision.

Huge plus if you have prior experience working with kids, working in education sector, working with government schools.

COMPENSATION

This is a volunteer based position and there shall be no monetary compensation.
