We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic individual to join our educational institution as a Student Counsellor. The Student Counsellor plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support to students, helping them navigate academic, personal, and social challenges. The ideal candidate should have strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of student development, and the ability to create a safe and inclusive environment for students to express themselves.
Responsibilities:
Student Support and Guidance:
Provide individual and group counselling to students, addressing their academic, personal, and social concerns.
Assist students in developing effective study skills, time management techniques, and goal-setting strategies.
Conduct assessments to identify students’ strengths, challenges, and emotional well-being.
Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other staff members to create personalized intervention plans for students facing academic difficulties or behavioural issues.
Offer guidance and support to students experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues.
Facilitate workshops and educational programs on topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, and bullying prevention.
Refer students to external resources, such as therapists, psychologists, or community services, when necessary.
Academic and Career Counselling:
Assist students in identifying their academic interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
Provide guidance on course selection, academic planning, and career exploration.
Help students navigate college applications, scholarships, and other post-secondary education opportunities.
Conduct career assessments and provide information on various career paths and job market trends.
Assist students in developing resumes, cover letters, and interview skills to enhance their employability.
Organize career fairs, guest speaker sessions, and networking events to expose students to different career options.
Crisis Management and Support:
Respond to critical incidents, such as student emergencies, conflicts, or mental health crises.
Collaborate with school administrators and external agencies to develop and implement crisis management protocols.
Offer immediate support and referrals to students in distress, including reporting potential cases of abuse, neglect, or self-harm.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in all counselling and crisis situations.
Record-Keeping and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including counselling sessions, assessments, and interventions.
Prepare reports on student progress, counselling activities, and program outcomes as required.
Utilize counselling software or systems to document and track student information.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Relevant experience in student counselling or related roles.
Knowledge of counselling theories, techniques, and ethical standards.
Strong understanding of adolescent and young adult development.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and staff.
Empathy, compassion, and sensitivity when dealing with diverse student populations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
Familiarity with assessment tools and techniques for counseling purposes.
Familiarity with educational systems, academic requirements, and college admissions processes.
Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
Certification or licensure as a counsellor or therapist (e.g., LPC, LCSW) is a plus.
