Job Description

Role & responsibilities

The goal of the Learning Support Assistant (LSA) is to support Student in his academic and extra-curricular activities, such that :

  • Student will become more independent
  • Student will improve his interactions and make more friends
  • Student will build his confidence by participating more in class
  • Student will understand and apply concepts taught in class
  • Student will be on, or above par with his class

Student has been admitted to Global Public School International (GPSI – IGCSE curriculum) in Grade 7. The school is located in Chottanikkara, Kochi, Kerala.

The academic year of the school runs from June to March every year. During this period, the LSA shall join Student in his class room everyday, and assist him in his classwork such that he is able to understand and restate the concepts taught in class. The LSA shall communicate with the parent on his daily activity in class through :

A) Behaviours – Some adjustments for a child of his age can be made if necessary for behaviours such that he is not penalized for every infraction.

B) Academic/Extracurricular activities brief on what was taught in class and how he has understood the matter.

The reports above (sample format will be provided) should be provided to the parent at the end of each school day. Should any additional/specific feedback be required, then the LSA shall communicate the same with the parent.

Given that the relationship of a LSA encompasses the school, the student and the parent, it is vital that the relationship with all is maintained in a professional and respectful manner. In general,

  • Bring a positive attitude. Build a strong, trusting relationship with your ward.
  • Provide one-on-one support to Student to complete work, in all subjects
  • Monitor and document daily student progress as outlined in section Principal Responsibilities
  • Be respectful and patient towards other students in class, especially since many will be curious of an “extra” adult in the room.
  • Strategize your action plans for each day on how best to make Student understand the matter being taught in class, and how to make it simpler for him. If needed, take cues from the subject teacher.
  • Collaborate with classroom/subject teachers, as well as with the schools’ counsellor/special education team
  • Assist with the preparation of materials as needed. Any printing needs can also be asked of the parent especially if these are excessive/voluminous.
  • Take initiative to meet with the teachers to plan any learning strategies or upcoming lessons. If you are prepared, then that’s more than half the battle.
  • If assigned a sensory/quiet room, keep it tidy. Student should also be told to tidy up after himself.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times. Reports related to Student academic/non-academic/medical needs should not be shared outside of the school/parent.
  • Personal mobile phones may not be permitted during working hours, except when on break.
