Overview

The English and Examinations Strategic Business Unit (E&E) is one of three strategic business units in the British Council (the others being Arts and Education & Society) all of which have the remit to build trust for the people of the UK by building relationships through aspects of our language and culture. E&E achieves this by enabling people across the world to access the life-changing education and work opportunities that are created by learning English or gaining valuable UK qualifications. Promoting the English language also provides a medium for communication, helping break down barriers of misunderstanding or mistrust between cultures.

This role is a new role as part of English Transformation programme. In line with the Global Recruitment policy, standard application and recruitment decisions will apply for this role.

Role purpose

• To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of in-house teacher development programmes and support.
• To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
• To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience.
• To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Main accountabilities include but not limited to

Teacher Support

• Provide effective line management and support for staff including observations as per performance management guidelines, policies and procedures.
• Ensure that all teaching is delivered to standards set out in teachers Role Profiles, the Global Statement of Approach and British Council Global Teaching Standards
• Assist in the recruitment, induction and onboarding of new teachers.
• Teach classes in the teaching centre in which you are based, according to local needs. Act as a role model as a teacher and keep your teaching skills honed

Teaching Excellence

• Contribute to the design and implementation of an annual CPD programme which aligns with Regional Teaching Excellence Action Plan.
• Act as a role model for good classroom practice by encouraging teachers to observe you or others teaching, doing demonstration lessons, leading teacher development sessions and conducting observations

Product and service delivery and development

• Ensure frameworks to support teaching and learning (Statements of Approach, IP, Teaching Standards Framework, Product guidelines, TEAP) are understood and implemented by academic colleagues in their day to day work.
• Ensure teachers communicate relevant policies to learners (e.g. statement of approach, behaviour policy, product information, EDI etc) during the course and support and advise other teams with communications (e.g CS and Marketing).
• Work with the Teaching Operations and Customer Services teams to deal with academic enquiries or complaints ensuring teachers are fully briefed and consulted where appropriate.
• Contribute as appropriate to cluster / regional product team
• Organise the piloting of new courses and materials where relevant

Safeguarding, EDI and SEND

• Embed Safeguarding culture in teaching and learning through contributing to country safeguarding risk assessment and plan and implementing assigned actions
• embed EDI through delivery of regional EDI objectives and workplans through local teaching teams (e.g. through Teaching Excellence Action Plan – TEAP).

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

2 years post-diploma i.e. DELTA/Trinity Diploma TESOL experience.

Extensive knowledge and experience of management and delivery of teacher training.

Experience of line managing/ coordinating teaching teams.

Experience in teaching:

• Adults (1800+ hours) and Young Learners (1200+ years)

Other experience (centre specific)

• Planning and Forecasting (Level 1)
• Monitoring and Reporting (Level 2) Monitor performance against targets and takes action to manage exceptions (e.g. not meeting/exceeding re-reg targets)
• Proven ability to present effectively in meetings with internal and external stakeholders and host high-profile events

Desirable

• Developing Business (Level 2)

Languages

• Both internal and external candidates should demonstrate full mastery of English across 4 skills, equivalent to CEFR C2.
• External candidates should add results of their IELTS test (IELTS Academic Paper Band 8/9 in each of the 4 sections).

Education

Essential

• Undergraduate Degree.
• Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Certificate TESOL.
• Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Diploma TESOL or equivalent as recognised by the British Council.

Desirable

• Relevant Young Learner qualification (for ST YL).

Other important features or requirements of the job

• Provident Fund Transfer in and out from EPFO is not possible as BHC PF is managed by a private PF trust governed by Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO.
• In case, a candidate from BCMS or BCE is selected, they would be required to resign in their current organization and join here on a new contract and as per the terms and conditions of BCD.
