Texas A&M University invites applications for the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Animal Science (ANSC).
The Professor and Head will serve as the chief administrative officer of the Department and as an advocate for Animal Science and the disciplines that it represents. The Head reports to the Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU), College Station. This will be a 9-month tenured position, with a research appointment (negotiable from 25-40%) and an administrative stipend equivalent to two months of summer salary. The stipend will be in place for as long as the person holds the position of Department Head. The Department Head provides leadership and support for numerous faculty initiatives that include: enhancing and expanding undergraduate and graduate education, increasing contributions to knowledge and science through extramurally funded research and educational programs, fostering collegiality and interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, conducting Extension and outreach programs, securing additional resources through development, strengthening relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, and promoting communication of science-based findings to inform public policy and private decision makers. This position will serve a critical need for the Department of Animal Science in support of its five Areas of Excellence: 1) Cattle Adapted to Tropical and Subtropical Environments; 2) Pregnancy and Developmental Programming; 3) Quantifiable Animal Performance; 4) Student and Stakeholder Engagement; and 5) Safety, Quality, and Nutrition of Food Products.
Candidates for this position must have earned a doctorate in animal science or a closely related field, with a record of distinction in research and/or Extension, teaching and service that would qualify them for tenure. Candidates must have evidence of effective and visionary leadership, successful management of multidisciplinary programs, innovative thinking, and an understanding of the teaching, research, Extension, and service mission of ANSC. They must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students, and be committed to promoting a multidisciplinary, multicultural, and diverse community of scholars and educators.
The successful candidate must possess outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse clientele and stakeholders and the ability to promote ANSC and increase its national and international prominence. A record of success in the development of funding and program support is also highly desired.
Preference will be given to those with a record of active participation in professional organizations relevant to the disciplines represented by faculties in ANSC and an understanding of the Land-Grant University.
About the Department: As an administrative unit of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service within the TAMU System, the Department of Animal Science has a diverse and dynamic mission with 65 faculty and 35 staff members. The Department is a leader in the discovery and dissemination of animal science knowledge to educate students, promote optimal health and wellbeing of humans and animals, and serve the food and animal needs of Texans and beyond.
ANSC offers undergraduate and graduate degrees within the disciplines of Animal Science, and many faculty members lead several of TAMU’s interdisciplinary programs. Approximately 1236 undergraduate and 129 graduate students were enrolled in Fall 2022. The ANSC department’s programs prepare future leaders for academic, industry and government positions through undergraduate and graduate programs, internships, and high impact experiential learning activities in the animal sciences.
The ANSC department’s faculty lead in the discovery of new knowledge, develop innovative technologies and form strategic alliances to enhance all aspects of livestock production and health and wellbeing of food and companion animals. These efforts will improve health and quality of life for people of the state, nation, and world. The ANSC department also provides sustained education outreach to the people of Texas to improve the health, wellbeing and productivity of livestock and companion animal species of interest.
