Company Description Somali Resilience Initiatives (SORI) is an independent, non-governmental, non-political organization supporting vulnerable and marginalized communities in Somalia to cope with and recover from human-made and natural disasters. SORI focuses on protecting lives and livelihoods through timely, reliable, and cost-effective responses, with a strong emphasis on food security and resilience. The organization partners with government institutions, smallholder farmers, development partners, research institutions, academia, and local communities to build resilient food systems and end hunger. SORI also promotes innovation in agriculture, strengthens value chains through vocational training and knowledge exchange, and provides equitable, gender-sensitive services to address the root causes of poverty and vulnerability. In addition, SORI advocates for human rights, peacebuilding, and good governance to promote long-term stability and resilience in Somalia. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Cooking Instructor role based in Balianta. The Cooking Instructor will plan and deliver practical cooking lessons that focus on safe food preparation, culturally appropriate recipes, and cost-effective meal planning for individuals and families. The role includes demonstrating step-by-step cooking techniques, guiding participants during hands-on practice, and ensuring adherence to hygiene and safety standards in the training kitchen. The instructor will integrate basic nutrition education into lessons, explaining how to prepare balanced, healthy meals using locally available ingredients. Daily tasks include preparing lesson plans and teaching materials, organizing ingredients and equipment, monitoring participant progress, and providing constructive feedback. The Cooking Instructor will collaborate with program staff to align training content with SORI’s livelihood, resilience, and food security objectives, and may contribute to community outreach and awareness activities related to healthy eating and food safety. Qualifications
Strong practical abilities in Cooking and Food Preparation, with experience teaching or demonstrating recipes in group or community settings.
Proficient Culinary Skills, including menu planning, portioning, and safe use of kitchen tools and equipment.
Knowledge of Nutrition and Nutrition Education, with the ability to translate concepts into simple, actionable guidance for diverse participants.
Experience conducting trainings, workshops, or classes, with clear communication and facilitation skills.
Commitment to gender-sensitive, inclusive, and culturally respectful teaching practices.
Ability to maintain high standards of food hygiene, safety, and cleanliness in a teaching kitchen environment.
Organizational skills to plan lessons, manage time, and coordinate materials and supplies effectively.
Previous experience in community development, livelihood programs, or humanitarian or NGO settings is an advantage.
Relevant vocational certification, diploma, or training in culinary arts, hospitality, nutrition, or a related field is preferred.
