Godrej Agrovet (GAVL) is a conglomerate within the conglomerate, Godrej Group. GAVL has a portfolio of 8 businesses in the agriculture industry, with consolidated revenues of ~1Bn USD. The business is focused on India, apart from exports in some segments, and a business based in Bangladesh. Many of the business need to deal with the vagaries of commodities either on the input side or on the output side. For ease of understanding, these can be seen as three verticals:
– Food:
o Dairy business (Creamline Dairy) primarily in south, across milk and value added products,
as a B2C + B2B business
o Godrej Tyson Foods in the poultry business, with segments in live bird business, chicken processing (B2B and branded B2C play, Real Good Chicken), and frozen foods (Yummiez). Operations are based in West and South, with markets serviced in and beyond West / South based on the business
– Feed:
Animal feed business which accounts for ~50% of GAVL’s revenues. This is a B2C business in cattle feed and poultry feed largely. As a national player, the business has leading market share at the national level and competes with regional players. Manufacturing footprint is distributed across the country.
Aqua feed business focused on shrimp and fish feed. Manufacturing facilities are in Andhra Pradesh, and expanding. Andhra, Telangana, Orissa, WB, Gujarat are key markets, with specific focus on rest of India
o ACI Godrej is a JV in Bangladesh, focusing on all segments of feed.
– Agri
Crop Protection Business is a B2C business selling insecticides, herbicides, fungicides across the country
Astec focuses on agri intermediates / technicals and is a B2B business
Oil Palm Plantation has major operations in Andhra. We source Fresh Fruit Bunches from farmers and mill them into Crude Palm Oil, and Crude Palm Kernel Oil. This is a B2B business.
Key responsibilities
The strategy team works closely with the MD and the various businesses, with the team members working on an average with 2 businesses. The scope of work might start with one business initially, and expand to as much as three businesses later. Unlike some of the other Indian firms, strategy is an established function in Godrej Agrovet and has been in existence for a decade.
The nature of work would broadly cover the following.
1. Portfolio mgmt. / decision support
• Framing / refreshing strategy, when required
• Strategic decisions including M&A
• Transformation projects
• Insights from existing and emerging business models
• AOP / LRP / Reviews
2. Digital roadmap, followed by
• implementation
• building partner network
• building team
3. Startups – Supporting businesses in shortlisting and piloting
4. Governance as part of working with consultants
5. Culture and capability of innovation
6. New business incubation
We expect majority of the time of the strategy team members to be spent on point 1 above. Even though there are specific elements like digital which the separate sub-team will handle, the strategy team member will contribute to the cause, so that the digital efforts are aligned to the strategy of the business
The Candidate
Professional Experience:
- The team member will report to the Head of Strategy. – Management consulting or corporate strategy experience is preferred, at least a significant quantum of the experience.
- Passion for problem solving is a must. Apart from solving the problem, communicating the same, and being able to work with the business (CEOs and their business leadership teams) to adopt / implement the recommendations is equally important.
- Experience with financial analysis, and communication tools (powerpoint / word / excel) are a must, as the team members work on critical issues, and will not have full time oversight.
- Willing to travel to manufacturing and market locations across businesses (which are spread across the country) to understand the business, design the initiatives, and drive implementation.
- The role will be based in Mumbai with travel as required (may or may not be every week)
Who are we looking for?
Education:
MBA from Premier Institute is Mandatory
Experience:
6 years of experience overall. Compensation and grade will be decided depending on the experience and capability of the individual.
Management consulting or corporate strategy experience is preferred
